This week, as I’ve considered the approach of Mother’s Day, I’ve thought a great deal about the mothers in my life. I was blessed to have a magnificent mother and mother-in-law; my sister-in-law, and my aunts and grandmothers were and are tremendous mothers as well. I am further blessed that my circle of mothers extends beyond my family; it includes many friends who have taught me much, through discussion and example, about being a good mother.

Many of those friends are women in this congregation; others I have come to know through our school and through Pacifica Christian. These sisters in faith are superb examples of a godly mother, one who raises her children not only to believe in the Word but to live it daily. Women who cherish the delights of motherhood, but also meet its challenges head-on, strengthened by the assurance that God walks with them. Mothers who give of themselves without reservation, knowing they will be renewed by His peace and grace. Some of these women aren’t biological mothers themselves, but are spiritual mothers to many, leading by example, teaching with love, nurturing and inspiring the young hearts around them.

All of these women are truly raising children – not just helping them grow and thrive, but raising them up, and lifting their hearts, minds, and souls so they can know the Lord better. By raising these children, they raise us all; they surround us with vibrant brothers and sisters in faith who help us reach for a closer relationship with God.

This Sunday, as you give thanks for the circle of mothers in your life, be sure that circle encompasses all the mothers who bless your life and bring honor to the Lord. Give thanks for them, and pray that they will continue to serve the Lord and build His Kingdom through love, devotion, forgiveness, and joy.

“She opens her mouth with wisdom, And the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. She looks well to the ways of her household And does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed…”
