I had a problem this week at work – not a large one, but it was frustrating. Between wanting to be discreet on the set and knowing it would be difficult to convey the situation to anyone not on the set, I found myself in an uncomfortable position: I didn’t have anyone to talk to about this.

But the moment I thought that, another thought came in quiet response: I always have someone to talk to. Someone who understands every situation because He sees every situation. Someone who keeps all the secrets of my heart, even those I have forgotten because He has already forgiven them. Someone who will listen to me with patience and answer me with compassion, no matter the size of the problem. I can call upon the Lord: He is always just a prayer away.

I sat down to pray, but I wound up talking: I had a conversation with God as though He were a friend sitting across from me – because He is. Rather than simply praying that He help me take care of this problem, I explained the problem to Him in detail. And as I did so, He helped me see where I could take action, action based in caring for this individual and for the other members of our crew. I was able to take the clarity and the reassurance He offered me and change the way in which the individual was interacting with me and with others. Talking to God in this way had the additional benefit of refreshing my prayer life, which had become routine and rushed in the last several weeks. It reawakened me to the power and the beauty of communicating with our loving Lord.

I encourage you to sit down and have a talk with God this week. You might have a heart-to-heart with Him about a problem. You might thank Him for all the things you’ve been meaning to thank Him for, as soon as you had a chance. Or it might just be a pleasant chat, catching up like old friends are meant to do. Call on Him: He wants to talk to you.

“The Lord is near to all who call on Him,to all who call on Him in truth. He fulfills the desires of those who fear Him;He hears their cry and saves them.”

Psalm 145:18-19
