WLMS JUNIOR THESPIAN SOCIETY

PROUDLY PRESENTS

T
ickets are now available for this Year’s Middle School Spring Production of THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE.
Wacky, irreverent and as entertaining today as it was when it first opened in 1879, THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE spins a hilarious farce of sentimental pirates, bumbling policemen, dim-witted young lovers, dewy-eyed daughters and an eccentric Major-General, all morally bound to the often-ridiculous dictates of honor and duty.

The original production was actually in 1879. Gilbert and Sullivan had just had an incredible smash with H.M.S. Pinafore the year before -- the entire world was still singing its tunes on the streets. According to one count, there were no fewer than a dozen companies of Pinafore playing in New York at the same time, none of them legal. Copyright laws were virtually nonexistent for British authors in America, so to get a firmer hold on their property the great Gilbert and Sullivan decided to premiere their next work, The Pirates of Penzance, in New York. One small snag: On the ship across the Atlantic they realized that they'd left the finished score at home. So the team spent the next few weeks furiously rewriting for the premiere on New Year's Eve, 1879 at the long-gone 5th Avenue Theatre. We hope you enjoy our version of this ever-popular show.
